Directing Their Own Learning

This year’s Green Schools National Conference Student Summit will focus on how students can work together to help create the sustainable schools and communities of the future.

The summit, titled “Youth Leadership: The Growing Edge,” will allow students to direct their own learning by choosing from a wide range of workshops and discussions convened by youth leaders.  They will create the agenda and have an opportunity to lead a workshop on any topic, project, or question that matters to them.

“This summit will honor students’ passions, their experience, their questions, and their current and future projects,” says Chris Weaver, summit facilitator. “Students will direct their own learning, sharing dreams and strategies for action with other powerful and visionary students from around the country.”

Students will connect face-to-face with other youth leaders from around the country, share their visions using social networking tools, and plan inspired actions for the future.

From the opening Friday evening session to the closing session on Sunday, participants will connect with each other as they explore the topics and issues that connect us all.

“The summit will place the agenda in students’ hands, through a dynamic self-organizing meeting process called Open Space Technology,” explains Weaver, who also serves as 3rd Grade Lead Teacher at the Evergreen Community Charter School.
“Student participants will be invited to convene – or just attend – discussion groups on any topic that matters to them – a successful project, a compelling question, a vision for future action.”
